After completing my course/training, can I take the road test with My First Drive Driving School?

Yes, after completing your classroom and in-vehicle training, you can take the road test with one of our partner driving schools.

As a teen, what do I need to bring with me for Texas DPS road test?

You need to bring the following when going for a road test:

Your learner's license or permit
Your course completion certificate
Your ITTD certificate

As an adult (18-24), what do I need to bring with me for a road test?

You need to bring the following for a road test if you are 18-24 years of age:

Your permit
Your course completion certificate
Your ITAD certificate

What is your refund policy?

REFUND/TERMINATION/DISCONTINUED COURSE POLICY

The effective date of the termination for refund purposes will be the earliest of the following:  (a) the last day of attendance, if the student is terminated by the school;  (b) the date of receipt of written notice from the student; or  (c) the 10th school day following the last day of attendance.

If tuition is collected in advance of entrance and, if a student does not enter the school, terminates enrollment, or withdraws, the school: (a) may retain not more than $ 50.00 as an administrative expense; and (b) shall refund that portion of the classroom tuition and fees and behind-the-wheel tuition and fees that correspond to services the student does not receive.

A full refund of all tuition and fees is due and refundable in each of the following cases: (a) when an enrollee is not accepted by the school; (b) if the course of instruction is discontinued by the school at this location; or (c) if the student's enrollment was procured as a result of any misrepresentation in advertising, promotional materials of the school, or misrepresentation by the owner or representation of the school.

Refunds shall be completed within 30 days after the effective date of termination; there are no refunds after the certificate issuance.

Tuition is refundable with a written request and will be sent to the student within 30 days of the student's withdrawal or termination. A refund will be pro-rated and given based on the cost and length of the program.

What is your no-show or late cancellation policy?

A NO-SHOW fee of $60 will be charged in each instance when the school is not notified of a cancellation or rescheduling at least 24 hours prior to a scheduled in-car lesson.

A student that does not show up within first 10 minutes of the scheduled class will be considered no show and will be responsible for no-show fee of $60.

Students must arrive 5 minutes before their scheduled drive time for check-in. Late students will not be allowed to drive for that day and will have to be rescheduled. Our drive schedules are designed in a way that provides flexibility for the student, but late arrivals put a strain on our schedules causing a delay for other students. If a student has to be cancelled for being late a $60.00 will be charged. This fee is to help cover the cost of the contracted instructor who showed up for the drive time. Parents, please make your best effort to pick up your student on time after they have completed their driving session. This helps us tremendously by staying on schedule.

What is your weather policy?

Safety is always foremost on our minds when driving students. There might be times when would need to cancel driving lessons due to adverse weather conditions.  In such cases, your driving lesson may be rescheduled. You may or may not be notified of the cancellation due to adverse weather due to communication and other unforseeable circumstances.

Adults 18+

Are adults over 18 years of age required to take driver ed?

Yes, if you are between age of 18 to 24, the State of Texas requires you to successfully complete 6 hours of driver education before you can apply for a driver license.

Can adults over age of 24 take the driver ed course?

Yes, Texas adults of any age can take the TDLR approved adult driver course.

Can an adults take the 32 hour driver ed teen course?

Yes, anyone over age of 14 can take the full 32 hour TDLR approved teens course.

If I turn 18 while enrolled in 32 hour teen driver ed course, do I need to complete the 32 hours?

If you are enrolled in the driver ed as a teen, you must finish the entire 32 hour course even if you turn 18 while your course is in progress.

What is the length of an adult driver ed course?

For adults between ages of 18 to 24, classroom portion of driver ed course is 6 hours .
After completing the online course, you can obtain a learner permit and begin behind- the-wheel driving lessons.

As an adult, what do I need to bring to DPS/DMV to obtain the permit?

Proof of US citizenship/lawful presence (birth certificate, green card, etc.)

Two Proofs of Texas residency (utilities bill, etc.)

Proof of Identity (birth certificate, etc.)

Social Security Card

Certificate issued by school after passing the test.

Proof of vehicle insurance

Impact Texas Driver (ITD)

What is Impact Texas Drivers (ITD) program and where do I sign up?

The ITD Program is designed for saving lives through awareness and education. The
goal of the program is to educate drivers and reduce the risk of being involved in
automobile crashes, particularly those caused by distracted driving.

There are two different variations of this program:
Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) - a two-hour video course for teens.
Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITYD) - a one-hour video course for adults.

Are teens and adults both required to complete ITD program?

Teens between ages of 15 and 17 are required to complete ITTD before being allowed to take the road test.
All adults who have completed te 6-hour course and received ADE-1317 certificate are required to complete ITAD before being allowed to take the road test.

Road test must be taken within 90 days of completing ITD program.

How will I obtain my Impact Texas Driver (ITD) certificate?

After you have completed the program, Texas DPS will immediately send you a completion certificatevia email. This certificate expires after 90 days.

If you do not take you road test within 90 days after completing this program, you will need to complete the ITD course again.

General Information

Who is required to attend Texas driver education course?

Texas teens between ages of 14 to 17 and Texas adults between ages of 18 to 24 are required to attend TDLR approved driver education course before applying for a driver license. 

Teens are required to complete the 32-hour teen TDLR approved course whereas the adults are required to complete the 6-hour TDLR approved course.

What is the process to obtain a Texas driver license?

The process to obtain Texas driver license various by age.  

Texas teens ages 14 to under 18 are expected to complete a 32-hour TDLR approved teen drivers ed course, complete 7 hours of observation, as well as complete 37 hours of behind the wheel driving lessons.  Please see Teens section of FAQs for complete list of requirments.

Texas adults ages 18 to 24 are expected to complete 6-hours of TDLR approved drivers ed course.  Though, there are no explicit behind the wheel requirements for adults 18 to 24, candidates applying for a driving lesson must be proficient in Texas driving rules and laws to pass the written test and must also display proficiency in behind the wheel driving in order to pass the Texas DPS road test. Texas adults age 25 or older do not have explcit driver education requirement, but they must be proficient in Texas driving rules and laws to pass the written test and must be proficient in behind the wheel driving in order to pass the road test.

Does My First Drive Driving School offer teen and adult online courses?

Yes, My First Drive Driving School offers TDLR approved teen and adult online courses in partnership with TDLR approved driving schools.  These courses allow you the flexibilty to attend teen or adult course from the convenience of your home - without the need to drop off and pick up the students for each class.

Will an online driving course prepare me just as well as a classroom course?

Yes, the curriculum of this online course is identical to the classroom course with the flexibility to attend the course at your own pace without having to be dropped off and picked up at the school by your parent or guardian.

Does My First Drive Driving School offer behind the wheel driving lesson?

Yes, My First Drive Driving School offers behind the wheel driving lessons for both teens and adults.

At what age am I eligible to start driver education in the State of Texas?

You can start driver ed 32-hour class as early as age 14.  At age 15, you will be eligible to apply for a learner's license (aka permit) to begin behind the wheel driving lessons.

What is the youngest age at which a teen can take Texas driver ed course?

TDLR allows a teen to take driver ed course as early as age 14.  TDLR allows a teen to obtain a permit at age 15 to begin behind the wheel driving lessons. 

What is the youngest age at which I am be able to obtain a learner permit?

You are able to get your learner permit at age 15 after you have completed 6 hours of the the 32-hour classroom training and pass the written test.

What is the length of classroom part of the Texas teen driver ed course?

Classroom part of the driver ed is 32 hours as required by TDLR. After completing 6 of the 32 hours, and passing the written test, you are eligible to obtain a learner permit and begin your behind-the-wheel driving lessons.

What are TDLR requirements for a teen to obtain a driver license in Texas?

Texas teens under age of 18 must complete the full 32-hour driver-education course, 7 hours of in-car observation, and 37 hours of actual behind-the-wheel lessons, and completed Texas Impact Driver course before a teen can be eligible to take a road test.

KEY REQUIREMENTS FOR OBTAINING A PROVISIONAL LICENSE ARE THAT YOU MUST:

  • Have completed 32 hours of classroom training

  • Have completed 7 hours of in-vehicle observation

  • Have completed 37 hours of logged behind-the-wheel training

  • Have held learner permit for at least six months

  • Have completed ITYD training within the last 90 days

  • Have passed driving road test

Do I have to be enrolled in high school to take the teen driver ed course?

Yes, If you are are under the age of 18, you must be enrolled and attending high school
unless you already have a high school diploma or GED.

What is the length of a teen driver ed online course?

The length of teen driver ed course is 32 hours. After completing 6 of the 32
hours and passing the written test, teens  are eligible to obtain a learner's permit.

Are teens required to complete a driver ed course prior to applying for a driver's license?

To be eligible for a driver's license in Texas, individuals under 18 are mandated by the law to successfully complete a state-approved driver education course.

What is the length of in-car or behind-the-wheel training required for teens in Texas?

Teens are required to complete 7 hours on in-car observation as well as 37 hours of  behind-the-wheel training. Teens are required to log 30 hours of behind-the-wheel
driving lesson - all or part of which can be conducted with a professional school or  a parent/guardian.

As a teen, what do I need to bring to DPS/DMV to obtain the permit?

You need to bring the following to DPS/DMV to obtain a permit:

Proof of US citizenship/lawful presence (birth certificate, green card, etc.)

Two Proofs of Texas residency (utilities bill, etc.)
